Goodbye Stranger - Farewell Loops

Runtime: 1:15:02

"farewell is the beginning of silence.
silence is the eternity of letting go."

夏嬚 christens our 2024 with a moving, serene work as Goodbye Stranger, 'Farewell Loops'. Their most ambitious and emotionally resonant release thus far, Farewell Loops was created after 夏嬚's "默哀" and before 佚名's "逃脫者", expanding beyond the minimalist format of records past with lush walls of reverberating female vocals whilst retaining the meditative repetition that makes their body of work so endlessly exploratory.

Lost in the world, weary of the depressive, tireless pursuit of false growth, Farewell Loops is the sound of that languishing. A slow, gradual widening that only gets you farther downhill. We are swept up in countless independent cycles, the repetition of necessary yet tedious, quotidian actions, washed away by time in a grueling education system - and navigating those unsparing waters alone.

Sometimes, it is a journey where the traditional concept of family is not so, a game with cheaters in place of teammates, where love and understanding is measured against material wealth, and thus, amount to little more than empty catharsis, like the flat promise of an old, blank piece of paper. Processing these difficult realities allows for its own inspiration, though, and feeds a deep pool of melancholy from which we may draw comfort.

"I feel that sometimes life is just a collection of small and complex cycles. These cycles are the epitome of the process of inspiration and abandonment, carrying the past and present . . . It can be seen that I designed the entire album as pure cyclic poems, which can be understood as assumptions about some futures: what kind of starting point will I pass, what kind of cycle will I go through, and what kind of end point will I go to? How to start, how to persist, how to leave."
-Goodbye Stranger

As such, Farewell Loops may sound one-dimensional to some, but often that is simply true to the experience of living. Even having strained the soul as far as it can go, you still may have simply taken the wrong path from the very outset. Only in the inevitable end will it all gain that final, immutable context. Until then, the mystery provides inspiration and sustains us across the cyclic tedium of this unfulfilling existence.
