Magenta Room - Centres of Distraction

Runtime: 1:02:50

'Centres of Distraction' marks the third album from Gareth Sloan under the Magenta Room moniker. Among his various aliases, Sloan's Magenta Room project is distinguished by ambitious scale and exploratory composition. On these albums, Sloan's brush flows out of his expected bounds, fine and exacting. His compositions here retain the simple, approachable structure to his work as Halogen Star, amplified with a subtlety and gravitas that takes real patience to imbue. Thus, nearly two years following his last release 'Atmosphere Machine', we have been graced with 'Centres of Distraction'.

This album, maybe more than any Sloan has crafted thus far, evokes the stars. His penchant for distilling vastness is on full display, a journey through deep, pulsating planes of synthesis. Particularly like the first Magenta Room release, 'Twilight Magnum', 'Centres of Distraction' feels informed by synthwave, or at the very least it extracts that exhilarating futurism innate to the genre and feeds it into Sloan's cosmic rhapsody. The moody, foreboding composition of prior Halogen Star release 'Notion of a Somebody' rears its sinister head here, imbuing this awesome sound with a kind of sublime dread that Sloan is not afraid to linger in. Equally, those bright moments of euphoria, like on the collaborative piece 'Heredia', glimmer all the more so. With 'Centres of Distraction', Sloan cements his Magenta Room name as one to be regarded highly amongst his wondrous creations.
