Electroacoustic experimentalist varboska pays homage to the music of their youth on 'at long last', a sublime EP of downtempo, ambient and deconstructed electronic. Though working from straightforward structures, the outline of these tracks serve more to anchor varboska's canvas as he drifts into the dreamy outer realms of sound design.
Sonic artifacts of the late 90s / early 00s like vinyl crackle, static, guitar hum, CRT monitor whine and VHS noise are both literally and abstractly harnessed, filtered through varboska's emotionally-tinged memories growing up in post-war Croatia. These sounds comprise his sanctuary, arranged intuitively as an evocative stream of his musical consciousness.
If you listen closely, you can hear the soft gurgle of the central heating in December, the sizzle of scorching asphalt in the middle of July, the warm seaside breeze, the silent rustling of pine trees behind the loud chirping of crickets, the intensity and electricity of late summer storms. All of it is still so vivid.
Kristian Bagarić is a Croatian teacher of physics and computer science, as well as a self-taught music producer and visual artist. Under the artist name varboska, he creates experimental electro-acoustic music filled with autobiographical metonymy and hypnagogic and ritualistic motifs.
His live performances include Nova scena in the Zagreb club Pločnik, at the first ZEZ festival livestream, at VOLTA events in both solo DJ and live formats, and in a duo improv act with the producer Tonota. Together, they form an unnamed production improv/live duo, having performed together at Grounded festival in Ljubljana and collaborated on the multichannel A/V project called Interferences with Filip Pacak.
Additionally, he performs solo live improv/mixes under the auspices of the SUTRA collective for the Currents.fm COMMON MULTIVERSE INITIATIVE online festival.
His releases can be found on the SN4F compilation by the Ljubljana-based SNIF RECS label, which brings together producers from the Balkan region, as well as on our previous 'Future Unknown' compilation album.
He has also independently released three EPs under his own production, as well as an EP featuring an original single and remixes by close friends and collaborators (Tonota, Takt Juga, Late Dinner, Banora) and a mixtape of more than 40 tracks consisting of demos and tracks made between the years 2018 and 2023.
This wild experimental artist from Chicago uses electric kazoos, tape loops, and more to craft far-out, wonderfully confounding songs. Bandcamp New & Notable Mar 15, 2021
Woozy and hallucinatory, "napolifutura" is the kind of music that would play in an elevator in a Magritte painting. Also available on tape. Bandcamp New & Notable May 21, 2016
Listening to A Cockamamie Farce... On repite button... I'm in awe. I bought the whole album right away and I don't regret it. I'm sure the other tracks are also very interesting. These are like works of art... paintings... Which make up one - Room Six... Album on repite! Zenyk Pleshivskyi
