Hootie the Sailor - The Americanization of the Retro-Contemporary Skater

Runtime: 1:01:00

What is the deal with these pineapples? Earlier this year, film buff and media contortionist Jared Tuinstra allowed us to publish his debut album Zwerk to confused but amused fanfare. His work is rooted deeply in the absurd and rides the line between hilarious and unlistenable. That isn't the route that he's taken here on his follow up, The Americanization of the Retro-Contemporary Skater. Instead of creating elaborate patience testers, Jared has made something more akin to a legitimate depiction of what it's like to go insane in the internet age, albeit from a far more wholesome angle.

Brimming with samples both recognizable and obscure, TAotRCS sees Hootie moving towards complex clouds of sound and original compositions while never sacrificing the initial draw to his art. Described as an audio-bible for those seeking righteousness within oneself, the textures can be haunting, pretty and at times downright deranged. Something we strive to see in artists that release with us is an internal revelation, to reflect their personalities with no shred of irony. And although this one could be considered just as baffling as Zwerk, it is undoubtably a zeroed in on his own sensibilities. Skater on. Skater on. Skater...on.

The Americanization of the Retro-Contemporary Skater was written and produced by Hootie the Sailor.
Recorded and mastered in the basement suite during the summer and fall of 2019.
Artwork by Hootie the Sailor & Andrew the Donkey.
